Remote Lab (STUDENTS AND FACULTY)

To find an available computer:
  1. Navigate to the same lab/classroom that you normally meet in using the Lab Status Tool
  2. Copy the name of a "Free" computer
  3. Download and run the Remote Desktop Tool
  4. Paste the computer name into the Computer Name field and append ".ad.psu.edu" to the end and click connect.

Additional Remote Lab Resources (limited logins available)

To find an available computer:
  1. Follow the Remote Lab Services link to access Remote Lab. Please enter your account information using the following format:
    psu\youruserid (Example: psu\abc123)
    Note: Any prompts for credentials need to have psu included prior to your username.
  2. Select Remote Lab.
  3. Log off your remote session when finished.

MAC

  1. Download and open the Microsoft Remote Desktop App from the App Store
  2. Follow the Remote Lab Services link to access Remote Lab. Please enter your account information using the following format:
    psu\youruserid (Example: psu\abc123)
    Note: Any prompts for credentials need to have psu included prior to your username.
  3. Select Remote Lab.
  4. Open the downloaded file.
  5. If you are prompted to choose a location. Select "Desktop"
  6. Log off your remote session when finished.

  3. Select My Personal Computer
Note: These instructions were written based on an Ubuntu system, but should be applicable to any system using GNOME and NetworkManager.
  1. Configure and Connect VPN.
    1. Open a Terminal shell.
    2. Type the following command for Debian-based systems:
      sudo apt-get install network-manager-vpnc
      Or if you have a Red Hat-based system:
      sudo yum install network-manager-vpnc
    3. Once the command is finished running close the terminal.
    4. Open the System menu.
    5. Open the Preferences submenu.
    6. Click Network Connections.
    7. Click the VPN tab.
    8. Click Add.
    9. Select Cisco Compatible VPN
    10. Enter the following settings:
      • Connection name: ISP to PSU
      • Gateway: vpn.its.psu.edu
      • Group name: psuconnect
      • User name: Enter your Penn State Access ID (abc123) here.
    11. Click Apply
    12. Click the Network Manager icon.
    13. Open the VPN Connections submenu.
    14. Click ISP to PSU
    15. Enter your Penn State Access Account passsword.
  2. In Program Menu choose Internet-->Terminal Services Client or from a terminal shell type: tsclient &
  3. In the Computer field enter one of the Available Systems listed below.
  4. Enter your credentials:
    Username: Your Penn State Access ID
    Password: (leave blank)
    Domain: psu
    Client Hostname: (leave blank)
    Protocol file: (leave blank)
  5. Log off your remote session when finished.

Remote Desktop (EMPLOYEES)

To connect to your office computer:
  1. Aquire the name of your office computer using the My Computers Tool and copy the value for Computer Name
  2. Download and run the Remote Desktop Tool.
  3. Paste the computer name into your Computer Name field and make sure it (matches the format: computername.ad.psu.edu) and click connect
  1. Follow the Behrend Cloud Services link to access your office computer. Please enter your account information using the following format:
    psu\youruserid (Example: psu\abc123)
  2. Select Remote Desktops.
  3. In the "Connect to:" field enter your Penn State computer name - example (E8WENG1234).
  4. Choose "connect" and Enter your credentials.
    Example: psu\abc123

MAC

  1. Download and open the Microsoft Remote Desktop App from the App Store
  2. Configure the Gateway by going to Settings -- Gateway
  3. Enter: gateway.bd.psu.edu
  4. Choose: Save
  5. Setup the Remote Desktop settings by going to Remote Desktops
  6. Enter your PC Name
  7. Enter your credentials(Example:psu\abc123)
  8. Choose Save
  9. Note: Any propmts for credentials need to have psu\ included to your username
  10. Select remote on future uses
  1. Download and open the free Microsoft Remote Desktop app from the App Store
  2. Configure the Gateway by going to Settings -- Gateway
  3. Enter: gateway.bd.psu.edu
  4. Choose: Save
  5. Setup the Remote Desktop settings by going to Remote Desktops
  6. Enter your PC Name
  7. Enter your credentials(Example:psu\abc123)
  8. Choose Save
  9. Note: Any prompts for credentials need to have psu\ included prior to your username
  10. Select remote on future uses

  2. Configure the Gateway by going to Settings -- Gateway
  3. Enter gateway.bd.psu.edu
  4. Enter your credentials (Example:psu\abc123)

  6. Choose: Save (checkmark at the top right)
  7. Setup the Remote Desktop settings by going to Remote Desktop
  8. Enter a name for your connection
  9. Enter your PC Name
  10. Select the gateway (gateway.bd.psu.edu)
  11. Enter your credentials (Example: psu\abc123)
  12. Choose Save (checkmark at the top right)
  13. Select the connection you just created to connect

Jabber

Bring your Office phone number home with you! Jabber allows you to not only receive calls to your office phone number, but also to make calls appearing from your office phone number right from your computer. Jabber also allows you to easily check your voicemail This software is installed on all University computer or laptops if you would like it installed on your home pc or cellphone submit a request to IT.
*** For best performance - jabber works best if installed and run on the computer you are using at home.

VPN

Cisco AnyConnect is a VPN service that allows you to connect your computer to the PSU network. For PSU laptops or PSU Desktops off campus, you can start your Cisco AnyConnect VPN software to provide the same experience as being in your office! To Launch Cisco AnyConnect simply navigate the start menu and search for "AnyConnect" and run the application.

VDI

What is a personal virtual desktop?
  • A dedicated personal system that no one else can access.
  • Your data is protected within the Penn State network.
  • Your personal system can be accessed anywhere by any device via the internet.
  • The entire system is backed up nightly.

SOE Remote Project Systems

SOE Remote Farm systems are for projects and long running processes. These systems are restricted to students with instructor approval.
Please contact your instructor to request access to these systems.
Systems reboot the 2nd Saturday (2 a.m. to 8 a.m.) of each month for mandatory security patches.
Support Note: This service requires Internet Explorer.
  1. Go to Behrend Cloud Services to access the SOE Remote Farm. Please enter your account information using the following format:
    psu\youruserid (example: psu\abc123)
    Note: any prompts for credentials need to have psu\ included prior to your username.
  2. Select SOE Remote.
  3. Log off your remote session when finished.

SOE HPC Systems

SOE HPC systems are for projects and long running processes. These instructions are intended to connect and reconnect to one system in the SOE HPC group for extended use. You will will reconnect to the same system each time you visit. These systems are restricted to students with instructor approval.
Please contact your instructor to request access to these systems.

  6. Create the remote desktop by clicking the + button and selecting desktop from the dropdown
  7. In the Add Desktop window provide the following values:
    PC name: the name of an available system listed below.
    User account: Select your user account or if you haven't created add one select Add New and enter your psu account information.
    Example: psu\abc123
    Gateway: pennstate (or the gateway that you created)
  8. Click Add
  9. Double click on the new desktop to launch the connection.>
